FOODS TO AVOID
Week of: August 17, 2005
By now, your common sense (and possibly everyone else!) has told you what foods to avoid during your pregnancy. And in case, you don’t know, here are a few reminders:
Of course, we know we don’t have to tell you, but we just had to say it – ALCOHOL IS OFF-LIMITS!
*NO SUSHI! I know it’s just so delicious but also so dangerous to eat while pregnant. Uncooked fish could contain parasites that will make you and your unborn baby dangerously sick.
*SEAFOOD FACTS: Limit your intake of fish, especially tuna and salmon to an average of 6-10 ounces per week. Of course, always ask your doctor for his advice but this is a good general statement. Doctors also recommend staying away from swordfish, shark and mackeral as they contain high levels of mercury.
*SOFT CHEESES: Check to make sure that the cheese are about to indulge in has been pasteurized. Most Brie and Feta cheeses are usually pasteurized but please do your homework to make sure! Raw milk products may contain listeria which can cause premature delivery among other dangerous side-effects.
*CHECK SALAD DRESSINGS AND DESSERTS for RAW OR UNCOOKED EGGS! Yes, most Caesar salad dressings and desserts such as Tiramisu contain raw or undercooked eggs, which could potentially lead to food poisoning and unnecessary food illnesses, which are bad for mom and baby. Always ask and when in doubt, steer clear!
*COFFEE, SODAS and CAFFEINE: Limit your intake to 1 cup of coffee of soda a day.
*FOOD CHEMICALS: Studies to date are unsure as to the side effects that artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes have on your unborn baby. Limiting such chemicals are a wise decision.
As always, we recommend you discuss these matters and other nutritional matters with your doctor. Now more than ever is the most important time in your life to take care of your beautiful body! You are building a miracle and that takes a lot of work!
Be well!!!
