Keeping Cool During Your Pregnancy
Week of: July 5, 2008
Summer is here and with it the heat has arrived. And while eating for two sometimes has its perks, sweating for two can be almost unbearable. Pregnancy in the summer months can seem like an endless battle to beat the heat. Beyond comfort, staying cool is all so important for your health and the health of your baby. Here are some tips to keep our Hot Mommas cool all summer long.
1) Wear natural, breathable fabrics. Rather than wrapping your body in spandex or nylon, pick up a swingy, summery sundress that will allow your skin to breath while showing off your beautiful pregnant body. Choose light colors to increase your fashion's heat-fighting power. Finish off your look with cute sandals...your feet will appreciate the breeze and the open toes are a great excuse to get pedicures as often as possible. Hey, who couldn't use a little pampering, right?
2) Hit the pool! Bare your baby belly in a bikini and take a dip. Swimming won't just drop your sky-high body temp, it's also a great way to get in some exercise. Just remember to avoid the middle hours of the day when the heat and sun are at their worst. And repeat after me: Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. This is important advice for all women, but especially for moms-to-be. Pregnancy makes you more susceptible to sunburn and exposure to the sun can worsen your mask of pregnancy. Can't make it to the pool? Run a cool bath, grab a magazine, and soak away.
3) Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will keep you cool, healthy and looking great. What more is there? Tired of plain water? Mix yourself a virgin mojito or margarita. Invite your girlfriends over, use the fancy glasses and turn your afternoon into a girls' night out. Or fill a pitcher with water and toss in some lemon and cucumber slices. After a glass or two of this fresh twist on water, you'll swear you're at your favorite spa.
4) Can't stand the heat? Get out of the kitchen! Why add to the heat by turning on your stove or oven? How about a salad instead, one overflowing with fabulous fresh summer produce? Buy bagged salad greens at your local grocery store and add your favorite fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Steal ideas from your favorite restaurants and get creative. And for dessert? Frozen juice bars are a summer classic and a great way to cool down. And, of course, there's always ice cream!
Summer may seem endless, and, let's face it, sometimes pregnancy can seem that way, too. But both have a way of flying by. So remember to take time to enjoy their wonders and joys, even while cursing their discomforts. Stay cool!
