STRESS and PREGNANCY

Pregnancy is the beginning of a lifelong journey - quite possibly, the most wonderful journey of all. With all the joy and happiness and excitement comes stress. (Remember planning your wedding!!)

Pregnancy is a stressful time for many women. Your body is sure to be overwhelmed with so many different emotions that at times, it could become stressful trying to balance the wide range of feelings. It's completely normal to feel the way that you do BUT it's very important to learn to cope with this newfound stress.

Very high levels of stress may contribute to preterm birth or lower birthweights in full-term babies.

With that said, here are some tips to help reduce your stress levels during your pregnancy:

1) Drink LOADS of water. Good for everything, including lowering stress levels.

2) Eat well-balanced meals at least 3 times every day. Healthy snacks will also help fuel a less-stressed out body.

3) Exercise daily to help combat fatigue and stress.

4) Sleep at least 8 hours every night. Take advantage of the quiet nights now before junior arrives. Sleep significantly decreases stress levels as it increases your ability to think and act more clearly.

5) Find an escape where your mind and body can slow down and RELAX. Try pre-natal yoga or meditation or pre-natal massages.

6) Stay away from stressful people and situations as much as you can.

7) If the stress becomes overwhelming, talk to your OB about the possibility of seeing a specialist. Your OB should be able to recommend a therapist or doctor that suites your needs best.

8) And if you are able to, book a vacation prior to your baby's birth for one final escape!

Your body needs you now more than ever. Take care of you and your unborn baby. Be good to yourself and your baby by enjoying this time as much as you can.
