BACK TO SCHOOL!
Week of: August 17, 2005

SCHOOL DAYS!!! Big things are happening in September….SCHOOL! So exciting for everyone – not just the little ones! The first day of class is just around the corner, and your days are numbered now. We’ll help you get everything ready with this handy dandy checklist below.

First, it’s important to check with your child’s school to see what special requirements they might have for nap mats (if appropriate), lunch boxes, immunizations, uniforms, backpacks, etc. Being familiar with the school is the key to a successful school experience.

And a little secret….Book your appointment for your child to visit his doctor early! Late August and early September are the busiest times at pediatric offices. And if your child will be entering preschool or kindergarten, he must be up-to-date on his immunizations, so be sure to plan ahead!

*Help prepare you child with showing him how to open his lunch box.

*Same goes for a backpack!

*Teach your child how to spell his name prior to heading off to school. This will also help in recognizing his name on his cubby and desk.

*Every child needs a lunch box! Try Target, Old Navy or www.lunchboxes.com for the most complete selection of lunch boxes.

*Practice preparing healthy lunches and snacks for your little one. And try to pack wisely with recyclable products. Use a plastic lunch box rather than paper bags.

*Practice your routine for school days NOW, so you can allocate enough time for getting ready, having breakfast and loading into the car…and of course driving time. You don’t want to be late on your first day of school!

*Pick out the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL outfit with your child.

*The night before the big day, have a great healthy dinner and talk with your child about the first day of school. Perhaps read a book about going to school or a family favorite.

*We suggest packing a family photo inside your child’s backpack or knapsack. Good for the soul.

*And for the big day, relish in all the excitement and allow yourself (and your child) enough time to arrive early, take pictures, say proper goodbyes, meet or catch up with new and old friends and teachers.

Congratulations and Good Luck!
