Interview with Skye Hoppus - creator of Childish Clothing/Wife of Mark Hoppus of Blink 182
http://www.factio-magazine.com/womanofstyle/des_SkyeHoppus.cfm
Music has always revolved around Skye Hoppus - a former MTV Exec (she spent
close to a decade spearheading their West Coast Music office in Santa
Monica, CA.) and married to Blink 182's Mark Hoppus how couldn't it inspire
her?...These days Skye is bringing rock star style and mixing it up with
preppy, punk and mod for a movement that is making children and mom's
everywhere glad she mixes to the right beat of cool, hip maternity and kids'
wear. Childish Clothing, which made its debut in the spring of 2003, does
just that and more...Childish has already been seen on some of Hollywood's
hottest celebrities including Courtney Cox Arquette, Jennifer Garner,
Britney Spears and Gwyneth Paltrow when they were expecting. And, on the kid
front sporting Childish is Brooke Shield's daughter Jade, Heidi Klum's son
Wyatt and Gwyneth's daugher Apple and Sarah Jessica Parker's son James, to
name a few.
Born and raised in sunny Southern California, Skye Hoppus created Childish
Clothing out of her pure passion for modern fashion and design. As a young
mother, Hoppus was uninspired by maternity fashion while pregnant with her
son Jack. "I felt as if my sense of style was being compromised during my
pregnancy. Those amazing 9 months are supposed to be the most beautiful
times in a woman's life, and your clothes should simply reflect that," she
says. Since the birth of the collection, the line has received critical
acclaim for its cutting edge designs and fashion-forward thinking. The
maternity collections offer hip, form-flattering styles and fabrics to help
show off all the beautiful new curves in a pregnant woman's body. The
childish boy and girl collections present fresh, bold ideas into very
wearable kids' designs. Say goodbye to teddy bears, soccer balls and
typical kids' trends and step into a world of hip, cool, head-turning,
street-stopping fashion. Childish Clothing is available internationally at
fine boutiques and select department stores. And, if Childish Clothing
wasn't enough, watch out for her upcoming book titled Rock Star Momma - a
complete lifestyle book for pregnant women chock full of celebrity tips and
must-haves, set for national release February 2007. We caught up with Skye
to talk about her style, her company and how her rock star husband Mark and
their 3-year-old son Jack are endless inspirations.
FACTIO MAGAZINE: Describe your signature style.
SKYE HOPPUS: My signature style is pretty-how shall I say this?-all over
the place....For me, I love so many different, unique styles that I tend to
be influenced by all the things that I love about fashion. I love pieces
that are versatile to fit any mood. I love matching a high end skirt- (my
latest passions are Marni and Tracy Feith)-with vintage boots and a t-shirt
from cheap thrift stores!
FM: Define the style in LA. Where do you think the style is headed there?
SH: LA is amazing in that there are so many influences in fashion and style.
I love that people are edgy and experimental with their style. You have so
many influences-whether it be art, music, culture, trends, etc...LA is
simply a backdrop to a much greater destination. People in LA are more
likely to take chances and I love that!
FM: What does global style mean to you?
SH: It is the ability to take inspiration from all over the world and mix
it together in a style that is all your own. I use what I've seen in Japan,
LA, London, Sydney, etc. to create a look that works for me. Those
fashion-forward cities are highly influential in the marketplace and we all
draw from what everyone else is "doing". From traveling so much in the past
10 years, I've seen trends loop the globe and back.
FM: Give us an inside look at your career. (as creator of Childish
Clothing). Give us the inside scoop about the book you are coming out with,
ROCK STAR MOMMA.
SH: I was born and raised in sunny Southern California and created Childish
Clothing out of a pure passion for modern fashion and design. As a young
mother, I felt uninspired by maternity fashion while pregnant with my son
Jack. I felt as if my sense of style was being compromised during my
pregnancy. Those amazing 9 months are supposed to be the most beautiful
times in a woman's life, and your clothes should simply reflect that. So
with that mentality, I started CHILDISH CLOTHING. Prior to all that, I spent
close to a decade spearheading the West Coast Music office at MTV in Santa
Monica, CA. I believe that moms and children should remain true to their
individual sense of style. With all my experience working with pregnant
ladies, I decided to sit down and write a book, more like a GUIDE, for those
women who need a little extra help with looking good and feeling good during
their pregnancies. Enter ROCK STAR MOMMA...an amazing lifestyle book for
pregnant gals. From fashion advice, beauty tips, well-being tips and advice
from your favorite celebrity or expert, you need nothing else during those 9
months. I am fortunate that my favorite client and the most beautiful woman
in the world was kind enough to write the introduction to this book, Gwyneth
Paltrow.
FM: Which woman (past or present) has impeccable style and why? What women
in which city worldwide have the best style?
SH : Gwyneth Paltrow - always ravishing. Audrey Hepburn - a classic beauty
with impeccable style. Sophia Loren - bombshell, sexy and provocative.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis - talk about global influence on style...youthful
sophistication with such an enormous influence on 50s modern America.
Possibly the most admired First Lady in the history of our country.
FM: What is your biggest fashion vice?
SH: Shoes and Bags!
FM: What are your favorite shops worldwide? What are your favorites in LA
for clothes, shoes, beauty and home? Any online favorites?
SH: LA: Clothes: Tracy Feith, Marni, Maxfield, Fred Segal
LA: Shoes: Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Barneys, Maxfield Blue-great
markdown location for the real Maxfield.
LA: Beauty: Fred Segal Apothecary, Barneys
LA: Home: Jonathan Adler, Orange, Twentieth
Online: Net-A-Porter , www.shopbop.com
FM: What are your favorite places to travel? And, what are you always on the
hunt for to add to your wardrobe when at a new destination?
SH: LONDON-my ABSOLUTE favorite place to travel. What a city! Amazing
style, amazing shopping, delicious food, unforgettable sights, wonderful
people. Love everything about that city! London completely embodies
everything that I love about style. Such fashion diversity there...you have
all the extremes - sophisticated, demure, punk and trendy.
FM: Do you think money and style go hand in hand or can style never be
bought? Is it something you just have?
SH: Style CANNOT be bought but let's face it, money certainly does help.
FM: What key fashion pieces do you always have in your wardrobe?
SH: A great bag and shoes. I also have about 5 pairs of classic black
slacks-my favorite are made by Kateyone Adeli - what a great fit and amazing
cut. You can dress these up or down and are never complicated. A sure
thing!
FM: What's a fashion no-no when attending special events, galas and more?
Any tips for getting ready for an event?
SH: No-No's: pantylines, bulging bra lines, overdoing it.
Tips : Keep it simple and real. Forego the trends and stick with classic
styles and be true to your sense of style. Invest in a great pair of shoes
as these can make your whole look.
FM: Do you have any style icons?
SH: All those lovely ladies above have influenced my style or my approach
to style in one way or another.
FM: What would people be most surprised to know about you?
SH: I was a kick-ass soccer player! And quite the bully! I've now learned
to get what I want by using other means of "negotiating"!
FM: What are your own personal standards of beauty? And, what are your
standards for style?
SH: Beauty truly comes from within. If you are content on the inside, it
will show on the outside. And a little lipgloss-my favorite beauty
product-only helps!
As for standards of style, I expect well-made clothes that are functional
and durable.
FM: Does being married to Mark influence your design and/or collections? How
does your son influence you?
SH: I am constantly influenced by the men in my world. My husband has such
a presence about him that I truly adore. He has always been proud of who he
is and where he came from and that will never change. And our son Jack is a
mini version of Mark. They embody the SoCal lifeSTYLE in every way.
FM: What tips would you give women in general to be well rounded, balancing
out life and a flourishing career?
SH: Family first. They are your everything. Work hard, Have fun, Take
chances.
